Partnering with NextEd to Develop Sacramento's Workforce

The LaunchPath team works with all types of employers to make great internships happen, but we also work with other organizations who are helping prepare students for the workforce. NextEd is a Sacramento-based non-profit that works to bridge the gap between education and employers, making sure that what students learn in the classroom is relevant to their future careers—a pretty important part of preparing students for success in their internships. Partners like NextEd help us to better understand how we can improve internships on a regional level. We had a chance to chat with NextEd’s new interim CEO, Brian Bedford, about his involvement in LaunchPath and why internships are a growing focus for his organization.

It is an honor to serve the Sacramento region as the Interim CEO of NextEd. As a native Sacramentan, it is an exciting time to be working collaboratively with our employer and education partners to reimagine the future of our region’s workforce readiness. Together we want to promote employer-inspired- learning experiences and help develop our students into workforce assets.

I hope to bring a diverse perspective to NextEd gained from my education and various career experiences both in the private sector and higher education. I studied economics and race relations at UC Berkeley, and later went on to earn my juris doctorate and an MBA. I also have a combined 20 years of work experience having worked at Intel and Apple, and most recently in the Los Rios Community College District at Cosumnes River College as the Dean of Business and Family Science. Consequently, with my business and education background, this opportunity feels like a natural fit and I believe I am prepared to add value to NextEd’s charge.

We have an exciting year ahead of us and I am committed to working hard and doing what is necessary to ensure that NextEd is focused on its mission. To that end, LaunchPath will play an important role in our efforts to scale work-based learning for pathway students and expand their access to the world of work.
